February 6th to 8th, 2010

Peacock Bass fishing continues to be good, except in one river but, should improve as the Fly-In Floating Cabins move upriver into low fishing pressure areas. In 2 ½ days a total of 1428 Peacock Bass were landed by 36 anglers, 35 of which were in the 10-16 lbs. class, 3 in the 17 - 19 lbs. class and one 24 pounder caught on a Fly!

WATER LEVELS AT OUR AMAZON PEACOCK BASS FISHERIES:

North & Mid-North: (North Negro tributaries and South Negro Tributaries) Water levels at the headwaters of the Negro tributaries continue to be excellent. From the end of Oct. up to mid Nov. riverboats on the Negro channel had the best Peacock Bass fishing for the last 8 years but, fish size and quality has slowly dropped since over fishing from survival, commercial and even sport fishing may have caused an impact

Mid-North: ( South Negro tributaries and the Unini Preserve ) See Above ^

North-East: ( Roraima State ) The Branco tributaries water levels on River Plate’s exclusive fisheries (Taperá,Xeurini, Shufaris, and Homero ) continue to be extremely low and, in the case of the upper Tapera, even too low for our Fly-In Floating Cabins.

Mid-South: ( Igoapaçú Indian Reservation ) Water levels were perfect mid-October till mid-November and, are now high which is normal this time of the year.

South: ( Marmelos Indian Reservation ) Water levels were perfect during July-August and, are now high which is normal for this time of the year.

January 30 - Jeff Pope and John Lawson, a couple of wildcats from Kentucky, are just creating all kinds of problems for the bass at Huites! They are averaging 150 fish a day in the boat, up to 8 lbs. with the best bass coming off the banks with large and medium crankbaits - white and green. We also have John Stafford and his group bass fishing the creek channels with white/pearl wacky style Senkos which is producing up to 7 lbs.

Rigged wacky style, the exposed hook sometimes snags on timber. String a rubberband from under the barb to around the shank. The rubberband across the gap might help deflect wood and keep the hook from snagging....

Anglers Inn El Salto Bass Fishing

John and Kay Munoz know how to start a good fishing trip. For the past 12 years when staying at their time-share condo at Pueblo Bonito Mazatlan, the San Marcos, Calif., couple squeezed in a fishing trip to Lake El Salto. Early one morning during their most recent visit, John worked a 7-inch white fluke through some treetops sticking out of eight feet of water.

“I was bringing the fluke through the tops and working it just beneath the surface when a big fish rolled on it,” John said. “Immediately, I threw back there again. The second time, the fish grabbed it and I landed one right at about 10 pounds. It was my first fish of the morning. We probably caught about 15 bass that morning. Most averaged 2 to 3 pounds, but we also caught a 7.5-pounder.”

But for some unknown reason, Santa Claus has given us plenty of Mexican largemouth bass to keep us entertained at Lake Huites.

We have had an unusually high number of small bass caught at the lake. The key to catching the big bass is, don't get frustrated with the small fish, use your bigger presentations, 8 inch watermelon seed lizards, 6 inch swim baits. Russ and Narlin had the best luck fishing the humps in the main lake. The mornings are getting cool and the water temperature is dropping.

The third day of the season and our anglers boated 274 peacock bass. 21 of those were 10 lbs. or better, 6-10-pounders, 1-11-pounder, 2-12pounders, 2-13-pounders, 3-14-pounders, 1-17-pounder, 1-18pounder, 1-19pounder, 1-20-pounder, 1-21-pounder, and 1-22-pounder. Vaughn again had the big fish of the day. I heard that most anglers were so tired from catching all those fish that they were back in by 3pm. Another great day on the Rio Negro!

Our 18th season has officially begun! Yesterday our first group arrived at the Rio Negro Lodge and first thing this morning they all headed out for our first fishing day of the season. Our 18 anglers boated (please note that we do not count hook-ups or any fish that does not make it into the boat/net) a total of 207 peacocks (we do not count other fish) for the day with 2 10lb., 1 11lb., 2 12lb., 1 14lb., 1 16lb., 2 17lb., and 1 18 pounder! Not bad for the first day. The 18 pounder was landed by Ron Rhodes. Our internet provider for the Lodge said that the internet there should be up and running on Monday. Once they are online the daily fishing report will be posted from there with pictures of the big fish of the day.

Lake Baccarac

Date: October 1st, 2009
Name: Lake Baccarac Lodge
Hottest Baits: Swimbaits, spiinerbaits, crankbaits, buzzbaits
Hottest Colors:
Date Fished: September 27th - 30th
Comments: While fishing with Sixto Figeroa, obviously, the numbers are back. Our boat caught 62 bass between 1 1/2 to 4 lbs. on Thursday afternoon. We caught 11 bass between 5 and 8 lbs. This is quite exciting, considering we could not find this size largemouth bass most of last season. The bigger fish did not show up for any of us in three days at the lodge, which is not typical for this time of year, but we do except that as the water continues to rise, the big bass will come out of the deep and be at more catchable levels. I can say that fishing lighter line with smaller presentations produced the better numbers. Lake Baccarac is currently 83% full and rising, with afternoon rains almost daily up in the mountains. We did not see much in cloud cover around the lake. We will have another bass fishing report in one week.
